NRW promotes career entry in the Balkans - survey confirms the sustainability of internships and training courses

Wiesbaden, 30.08.2024. A survey recently conducted investigates professional whereabouts of Macedonian and Kosovarian graduates who participated in the "Career Transition Support Program", funded by North-Rhine-Westfalia. The survey’s results indicate that the program is making an impact: even after a year, the first group of funded participants remains closely connected to their home country and the Balkan region. Since its beginning, more than 100 candidates have been awarded the funding. They received a grant for doing a 6month internshp as well as in-depth trainings.

The survey, conducted on March 14, 2024, targeted the first group of participants who received funding from September 2022 to March 2023. Of the 52 recipients, 50 responded, yielding a response rate of 96%. The survey, which was not anonymous, featured 10 partially open-ended questions and was distributed via email with a link to an online questionnaire.

The following is a summary of the survey's main findings in relation to the project's objectives, focusing on the participants' professional status, regional ties, skill development, future career plans, and the sectors where the program has had an impact:

  • Regional ties: A strong connection to North Macedonia and the Balkan region persists, with 96% of participants remaining in the area one year after the program ended; only 2 participants are now working in Germany or Austria.
  • Professional status: 78% of participants successfully entered the job market and are currently employed.
  • Business sector: The survey suggests that the program predominantly benefits the private sector, with around 50% of participants working in private enterprises. Another 20% are employed in the public sector, while the remainder work in local NGOs (10%) or international organizations and companies (20%). The program also appears to encourage entrepreneurship, with 12% of participants starting their own buisnesses.
