In the context of the Palestinian uprising in December 1987, educational institutions in the occupied territories of Palestine were closed indefinitely by the Israeli authorities. Universities, colleges and schools, even kindergartens were forced to keep their doors closed and some were misused for military purposes. A generation of learners was denied the basic human right to education. The World University Service UK article provides an overview of the education system in Palestine and the situation in Gaza and West Bank territories between 1987 and 1989, and looks at the significance and consequences of the closures for Palestinian society.
