Description of the Organization

The department of media and communication is a joint facility of the Catholic and Lutheran Churches that provides educational media and audio-visual devices on a rental basis and offers other services related to media education. Our services are primarily, but not exclusively, directed towards educators who work in parishes, schools or in adult education in the Munich-Freising archdiocese and the Lutheran district office in Munich.

Our rental service includes 16-mm films, videos, DVDs, slides, transparencies and books; all media are included in the printed catalogue or in the online version of our database. The services we offer to our customers include: consultation in person or over the phone, information on new acquisitions at regular intervals, providing opportunities to browse through our materials.

Our second main focus is on involvement in media and communication education, which is accomplished through training courses, lectures, and other events for teachers in adult education and school teachers. The aims of these activities are:

  1. teaching people to use multimedia for instructional purposes,
  2. raising awareness for the importance of communication processes, and
  3. reflecting on these matters within the context of a theology of communication.

The results of our efforts find their way into the muk publication series (ISSN 1416-4244), which we are continuously expanding; the magazine includes a wide range of topics from suggestions for the practical work to theorizing on basic principles.

In reference to our aims and services our motto is: "We teach literature - and the literature of our age is the media." (John Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications)

Description of the Organization

The Westphalia State Multimedia Centre is an organisation for education and culture established by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe. The Westphalia State Multimedia Centre was founded in 1928 as a state media archive and is now a regional hub in the Germany-wide network of multimedia resource centers.

Our goals

  • To promote media-based educational opportunities both in and outside of school.
  • To provide information about the history of and current situation in the region of Westphalia with the help of media.
  • To preserve the cultural heritage of the region through audiovisual means.

Our partners:

  • The Westphalia State Multimedia Centre acts as a media service provider for educational purposes. As such it is in charge of schools and other educational organisations as well as media centres and the school administrations of the 27 cities and districts of Westphalia-Lippe.
  • The Westphalia State Multimedia Centre is also a service provider for cultural issues and primarily supports other LWL initiatives concerned with the preservation of cultural heritage. In addition, it addresses independent educational and cultural associations as well as private individuals.

Our activities:

  • Development, production and distribution of media related to the history and geography of Westphalia (videos, cds, dvds).
  • Collection, archiving and documentation of historic and current audiovisual documents (pictures, films, sounds) related to or originating in the region of Westphalia (for example more than 300,000 photographs from 1850 to the present day).
  • Consultation of archives and other organizations in Westphalia-Lippe for the purpose of archiving, collecting and documenting audiovisual materials.
  • Support and coordination of the work of local media centres in Westphalia-Lippe.
  • Promotion of media-based educational opportunities by consultation for schools, their sponsoring bodies, and e-teams on the authority of the Ministry of Schools, Youth and Children of North Rhine Westphalia.
  • Development, creation and promotion of media-based educational opportunities in and outside of school (for example use of media in nursery schools and the presentation of films in class).
