This first volume of the series "Academic Freedom" applies the criteria laid out in the Lima Declaration on Academic Freedom and Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in 1988 to an evaluation of the state of academic freedom worldwide. Case studies reveal the complexity of the issues under different conditions - occupation (Palestine), apartheid (South Africa), civil war (El Salvador), state violence (Columbia), and insurgency (Sri Lanka and Peru). A series of country briefings report cases where in 1989 there were gross violations of academic human rights. These includee China, Haiti, Sudan and Myanmar (Burma).
