On the basis of qualitative interviews with returned Ghanaians and Cameroonians, Julia Boger draws up a typology of career entry after returning to the country of origin. The typology shows that in addition to a university degree from Germany, social contacts, financial savings and good knowledge of the country are also important in order to master the entry into professional life after return. The returnees to Ghana have to use comparatively fewer resources when starting a career than their Cameroonian fellow students. The country comparison between Ghana and Cameroon makes it clear that there can be no conclusive generalised statements on return and career entry, country-specific characteristics of the labour market and the respective economic situation of the country are also important.
