Description of the Organization

The German Middle East Studies Association for Contemporary Research and Documentation (DAVO) is a scholarly, nonpolitical and nonprofit-making professional association open to all persons interested in the Middle East. The main aim of DAVO is to improve the exchange of information on Middle East studies between its members.

Middle East studies include disciplines relevant to the study of an area comprising all Arab states and territories, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, the Muslim states of the former USSR and Israel, as well as the impact of this region on the development of other parts of the world.

Description of the Organization

The German Institute for Human Rights, Berlin, informs about human rights issues in Germany and in other countries. Its intention is to contribute to the prevention of human rights violations and to the promotion and protection of human rights. The various functions of the institute include information and documentation, research, policy advice und human rights education within Germany. The Institute co-operates with international and national partners. In particular, it is concerned with the promotion of human rights treaties, with issues in the framework of security policy, peace policy and human rights, and with strategic issues with regard to human rights policy. The Institute offers seminars, lectures, and services in the field of human rights education. The Institute was founded in March 2001 following an unanimous decision by the German Bundestag of December 7, 2000. Three federal ministries provide the financial basis of the Institute: the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

Description of the Organization
  • is the Federal Republic of Germany's international broadcaster.
  • has the legal mission to convey a comprehensive picture of life in Germany and to present and describe the German positions on important issues. An amendment includes a expansion of this mission.

  • DW-TV in German, English and Spanish as well as programme slots and services in other languages – plus: GERMAN TV, the joint German-language programme of DW, ARD and ZDF, and with

  • is comprised of a multinational team of roughly 1,500 employees from 60 countries.
  • addresses, in particular, opinion leaders, decision-makers and people who speak and are learning German in other countries.

Description of the Organization

The Hammer Forum provides medical help for children in war and conflict zones. Help provided by the Hammer Forum is based on voluntary work of doctors, nurses and other people. It comprises founding stationary institutions in the children’s home countries, sending doctors and nurses from Germany to the various regions and, in exceptional cases, transferring injured children to Germany for treatment.
