Founded in 1994 by three NGO forums, Coordination SUD comprises over 100 non-government organisations organised in six main forums and directly associated NGOs.
Coordination SUD has two main objectives:
- Consolidation of international relations and support of NGOs with the meeting of their goals. It is the goal of Coordination SUD to introduce the international challenges into the public debate by working together with the French authorities, the European Commission, international organisations as well as NGO forums in the North and in the South. Different working groups of Coordination SUD enable NGOs to coordinate their positions and to fight for their interests in joint action. In addition, Coordination SUD has started a process in which networks are being built. NGO forums, countries of the South and the
North are taking part in these networks in order to guarantee an effective exchange of ideas but also to allow and support joint efforts. - Support with funding issues and the strengthening of institutions It is the objective of Coordination SUD to strengthen French NGOs and to grant them easier access to resources and funding. Various working
groups, like Cofri (Commission Financement et Renforcement Institutionnel [institutional commission for finances and reinforcement]), the Commission of Humanitarian Emergency Aid or the Working Group on Equality Questions, make it possible for NGOs to work on the improvement of their working methods and discuss suggestions for improving their work with public partners. The Synergie Qualité (synergy quality) programme deals with situation analyses and the planning of campaigns, and aims to define points of reference to improve the quality of the emergency aid performed by the NGOs. In addition, Coordination SUD informs and counsels many NGOs whenever questions concerning funding, the internal organisation of the NGOs and work in the South arise.
