Description of the Organization

Culture and Development is the documentation office of arts and culture for Africa, Asia and Latin America. It works together closely with artists who come from these continents, who have been living in Switzerland for a long time and who work in the areas of music, dance, theatre, literature, narratives, and the visual arts.

Other partners of C&D are organisers, agencies, cultural and development policy-related organisations, schools, churches as well as private and public financial aid programmes. A small and flexible team communicates information and works on building contacts to culturally productive individuals. Apart from this, it also serves as an adviser in arts-related and organisational matters and
fosters the networking of all people working in the domain of the "cultures of the south".

Various events and projects lacking adequate funding can receive support from Culture and Development.

Culture and Development is the cultural workshop of the following relief organisations: Brot Für Alle, Fastenopfer, Swiss Aid, and Terre des Hommes Schweiz. C&D is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Pro Helvetia, the Swiss cultural foundation. The objective of the organisation is to integrate artists from Latin America, Africa, and Asia into the Swiss cultural landscape, stimulate the intercultural dialogues and cultivate respect vis-a-vis the cultural values of other peoples. Culture and Development was given a culture prize by the Canton of Bern in 1998.
